The Chausie (pronounced Chow-see) is derived from the scientific name for the breeds wild
ancestor, the Jungle Cat, which is felis chaus. The Chausie was first granted foundation
registration status with TICA (The International Cat Association) in March of 1995. In February
of 2001, the Chausie was granted Evaluation Status and in February 2003 we were granted
advancement to Advanced New Breed. Our next step is to apply for Championship status,
which is likely several years away.
The Chausie is accepted in the three colors of the Jungle Cat - brown ticked tabby, black and
silver tip black (also referred to as silvertip melanistic), which is black with silver ticking.
Imagine if you could take the magnificent grace, size and exotic aura of a wild Jungle Cat and
combine it with the loving temperament and eating habits of a domestic house cat - what a
fabulous pet this combination would make !!!
That is exactly what this fascinating breed of cat called the Chausie was designed to be.
The Chausie results from the cross breeding of wild Jungle Cats with a domestic cat. This
offspring is considered an "F1", or first generation, Chausie. Breeding this to either an
acceptable outcross or a fertile male Chausie will give you "F2", or second generation
Chausies. Breeding again to Chausie or outcross will give you "F3" - third generation kittens.
Chausies are extremely intelligent, almost dog-like and highly active. If you are looking for a
lazy, low-key pet - the Chausie is NOT for you ! Their muscular build and wild ancestry
enables them to be quite athletic and fast.
Although many people would like to own a wild cat, it is just not feasible for many because of
the permit requirements, special housing and diet, etc. The Chausie is the next best thing to
owning a wild cat ! The size, wild look and walk of the Chausie tells you this is no ordinary
house cat !
